Caravan of the Year Finalist. Adventure 6.3 Black Edition

The team at On The Move Caravans had been working on the Black Edition of the Adventure range for several months, and once the prototype was built and on it’s way, we decided to send the van along to Caravan World’s Caravan of the Year event.

As it was a prototype, we expected some hiccups along the way, which is normal for any prototype, however, we were ecstatic with this one, and it seems the judges were impressed as well.

Adventure 6.3 Black Edition

This rugged off roader performed exceptionally well, and we are sure the avid adventurers out there are going to love this van just as much.

You can read the Caravan World write up on the Adventure 6.3 Black Edition on this link.

How to make your Easter long weekend in your caravan EGG-citing

If you’ve got the kids with you while you’re out in the caravan this Easter long weekend, you might be scratching your head thinking about how you might keep them entertained.

We’ve compiled a list of our top tips for first timers that’ll help make that trip one to remember, for good reasons.

Turn your campsite into an adventure zone with an outdoor Easter egg hunt.
Turn your campsite into an adventure zone with an outdoor Easter egg hunt.

As well as the usual activities you might do on holiday like fishing or bushwalking, you can think outside the box this holiday season. There’s no reason you can’t get crafty just because you’re in a caravan.

As well as bringing some traditional celebrations with you (think Easter egg hunts, eating hot cross buns and egg decorating) here’s a couple of ideas we think the kiddos will love.

DECORATE YOUR VAN

Start by transforming your caravan into an Easter wonderland! Let the kids unleash their creativity with themed decorations. Think Bunny ears, colourful streamers, and homemade Easter banners, which can turn your caravan into a festive haven on wheels. Get everyone involved in the decoration process and watch your mobile home come to life with the spirit of Easter.

Everyone loves a good pancake - and you’ll love it even more when it’s this cute.

EASTER EGG HUNT ON WHEELS

What’s Easter without an egg hunt? Turn your campsite into an adventure zone by organising an Easter egg hunt for the little explorers. Scatter colourful eggs in and around the caravan, making sure to choose age-appropriate hiding spots.

Consider assigning each child a specific colour to add an extra layer of excitement. Don’t forget to bring a basket for each eager hunter and let the egg-citement unfold!

Just make sure to be respectful if you’re parked up inside a caravan park – don’t hide anything in your neighbours’ campsite and make sure to keep chocolate away from wildlife.

If DIY isn’t your speed, check out local events.

BUNNY FACE PANCAKES

Hop on over to the camp kitchen for a morning feast fit for bunny royalty! Craft a whimsical masterpiece by flipping a pancake into a perfect bunny face (or go wild with a towering stack if the hunger monster strikes).

Add long ears with sliced bananas, pretzel whiskers, blueberry eyes and crown it all with two marshmallow buck teeth. It’s not just breakfast, it’s a hopping good time. Drizzle with maple syrup and cream for the ultimate delight.

FIND THE BEST HOT CROSS BUNS IN TOWN

They might have been on the supermarket shelves since Christmas, but honestly there is nothing like a warm hot cross bun with lashings of butter.

Just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean you need to miss out – in fact, we think this might be even better. You’re probably parked up in a caravan park or camping spot in a great little town for the Easter long weekend, so we’d bet there’s a fantastic bakery not far. Perfect for sitting around a campfire or picnic.

We’re all for supporting local while you travel and can’t think of a better way than this.

EGG DECORATING

Gather around the camp table for an egg-decorating extravaganza! Boil a batch of eggs and provide paints, markers, stickers, and other craft supplies.

Let the kids unleash their artistic talents as they transform plain eggs into miniature masterpieces.

Some popular methods of Easter egg decorating include painting, dyeing, decoupaging, wax-resist, and etching.

It’s a fun and creative activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, so don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.

BUNNY EARS AND EASTER BONNETS

While we’re still thinking about arts and crafts, why not make some cute bunny ears or Easter bonnets. Set up a crafting station with an assortment of materials like felt, ribbons, and pom-poms. Once everyone has their festive headgear, take a stroll around the caravan park to showcase your creative Easter fashion.

Bonus points for incorporating caravan-themed elements into your designs!

EGG AND SPOON RACE

Inject some friendly competition into your Easter festivities with the classic Egg and Spoon Race. Provide each child with a hard-boiled egg and a spoon, and let the racing begin!

The challenge lies in balancing the egg on the spoon while navigating a designated course. For an extra twist, consider introducing obstacles or turning it into a relay race. The first one to cross the finish line with their egg intact claims the title of Egg and Spoon Champion and, of course, a delicious Easter reward.

It’s a fantastic way to combine physical activity with the joy of Easter games, creating lasting memories for the entire caravan crew.

Vital Tips for first time caravan owners

Going on your first caravan trip is so exciting for many reasons – but if we’re being honest, it can also be a little bit scary when you don’t have the right information.

No need to stress though, On The Move Caravans is here to help.

We’ve compiled a list of our top tips for first timers that’ll help make that trip one to remember, for good reasons.

Vital tips for first time caravan owners
Take the time to go for a practice run

Practice makes perfect

Before your first big journey, go for a practice run. Why? Because a smooth practice run means a stress-free main event! Set up your caravan in your backyard or a nearby park to familiarise yourself with the process and any accessories you have. This can save you so much frustration when you reach your holiday destination.

It also helps to create a set-up routine. Every caravan is a little bit different, but here’s a quick breakdown to get you started: Unhitch the caravan, secure that handbrake, and clear your tow vehicle away.

Next up, level your caravan and drop all four corner steadies till they’re firmly on the ground.

Activate the gas and water systems and plug in the power. Now, step inside your cozy haven and give the power and water supplies a once-over: heating, taps, oven, fridge – the whole shebang.

Taking the time for a trial setup can enhance your confidence and competence, ensuring a smoother experience when you finally hit the road. Don’t forget to pack up properly too.

Also, don’t forget to practice reversing. Again practice makes perfect: put in training runs before facing an audience.

Don’t ignore campground etiquette

In the world of caravanning, embracing campground etiquette is the key to creating a community of respectful and considerate travellers. No one wants to be [‘that camper’ that everyone complains about.

Always be considerate of your surroundings. This isn’t just about being mindful of your neighbours, make sure you think about the wildlife too – this is their home after all.

Get to know your neighbours, you never know when you might need a helping hand. Plus sometimes they’ll know a thing or two about things to see and do, or you’ll make a new friend.

Other things to keep in mind are respecting the caravan park rules, stick to your own space, be mindful of volume – whether it’s music, TV or noisy conversations and always leave the campsite in the same condition you found it.

Vital Tips for first time caravan owners 2
Make sure you perform routine checks of your caravan

Enrol in a towing course

If you’re new to #vanlife, remember knowledge is the key to a worry-free caravanning experience. Towing a big caravan can be daunting, let alone potentially dangerous if you don’t follow a few rules.

Learning the ropes from seasoned trainers will help you understand things like payload and whether your tow vehicle is suitable or not. Ideally, do a course with your travel partner so you’re both on the same page. You’ll get hands-on advice about basic safety checks and tips on how to safely reverse a van.

Complete routine checks for early issue detection

Routine checks are the backbone of a trouble-free caravanning journey. By performing regular inspections, you can catch potential issues early, preventing them from escalating into major concerns.

Here’s a quick checklist to guide your routine checks:

  • Hitch and wheels: Look for signs of wear and tear, especially in high-impact areas like the hitch and wheels.
  • Seals around the windows and doors: Check for leaks or cracks. Damaged seals could allow dust and water to enter, leading to water damage or mould.
  • Roof inspection: Inspect the roof for any damage.
  • Ventilation: Ensure vents are clear of obstructions as proper ventilation is vital to prevent dampness inside the caravan.
  • Lights and signals: Confirm that all lights and signals are all in working order.
  • Handbrake and brakes: Ensure the handbrake is functioning properly and inspect the brakes for any signs of wear or damage.
  • Emergency equipment: Check your fire alarms, fire extinguishers and first aid kits to make sure they are all in good working order and nothing is missing or expired. A well-stocked first aid kit should contain bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, medical tape and other essentials.

Don’t forget to service your caravan

On that note, make sure to make time to have your van serviced! It’s drilled into us to always service our cars or motorbikes, but don’t let your van be forgotten.

The team at On The Move Caravans recommend servicing your caravan every 5,000km/six monthly, or before any big trip. If your caravan sits still for an extended period, it would be wise to get it serviced before heading out with your van in tow.

Our dealers offer a range of services:

  • Pre-Trip Service – check and repair (as required) of all major components.
  • Regular Servicing – check main areas of wear and tear together with those items that still require maintenance even when the caravan / RV is stored.
  • Electrical/Battery repairs and fitting – all 240V electrical and 12V battery repair and installation work including solar systems.
  • Gas fitting – repair, maintenance and fitting of all gas systems within a caravan / RV.
  • Suspension and Brakes – repair, maintenance and installation of all suspension types, braking systems and towing safety systems.
  • Carpentry – repairs, modifications and installations of all interior carpentry.
  • Exterior finishes – repairs and modifications to most exterior finishes used on modern caravans / RVs.

Vital tips for first time caravan owners 3
Leave the excess baggage behind when you pack your van

Don’t ignore noises coming from your caravan

If you hear anything out of the ordinary, don’t channel your inner detective. Immediately pull over and investigate the source of the sound. Can’t pinpoint the noise? No worries! If the source remains a mystery, it’s time to call in the pros. Schedule a check-up with a caravan professional to ensure every nut, bolt, and wheel is in tip-top shape.

Take it easy

No doubt you’ve been stuck behind a slow-moving van, but honestly there’s no reason to be embarrassed about taking it slow, especially if you’re new to the lifestyle. Naturally, towing something this big takes getting used to. It pays to rise early and hit the road before the crowds join the party. This is especially so when towing a caravan for the first time, as you’ll feel much more confident driving in light traffic.

Packing light 101

One of the top caravan tips for beginners – keep it light! Consider the weight of your caravan when fully packed. Overloading not only challenges your caravan’s limits but may also lead to legal consequences if you exceed towing capacity.

Packing heavy isn’t just a legal concern; it impacts your caravan’s fuel efficiency and manoeuvrability. Opt for a fuel-efficient journey and easier towing by taking only what you truly need for your trip. Leave the excess baggage behind. Literally.

Prepare to live in close quarters

Not used to living quarters in such close proximity to others? If you want to explore the country inside a caravan, it’s something you’ll have to get used to.

But don’t worry – it doesn’t have to be complicated, just make sure to plan accordingly. Bring a set of earplugs if you know that your companion snores. Take an eye mask as well if they like to stay up late reading with the lights on.

Find moments for everyone to enjoy some personal space – maybe a quiet reading session under the awning or a peaceful stroll. A little alone time goes a long way in keeping the caravan camaraderie intact.

On The Move Caravans is a family business, run by avid caravanners who love the lifestyle. Our people share this passion, and we’ll do everything we can to help make this part of the adventure a great beginning. If you’re thinking about starting your journey, contact us via the details here and we’ll be happy to help.

'Why we chose the Gypsy life': Inspiring reason behind young couple's adventure

Troy McLachlan and Areti Comino didn’t want to wait until they were ‘Grey Nomads’ to follow their dream of a life on the road.

Instead of fantasizing about all the amazing places they could go, the Gold Coast couple bought an On The Move Traxx Series 4 – and now they’re preparing to head off.

“We plan to go with the wind, be free, be gypsies I suppose,” Areti said.

For Troy and Areti, the prospect of waiting until retirement was not an option.

Both their fathers died young and that’s inspired them not to wait to follow their dreams.

“My dad was 59 and her dad was 60,” Troy said.

“So that was one of the driving forces behind why we decided we wanted to do it now, while we’ve got that window of opportunity.

“You could do it later, but you might not get to.”

The new On The Move ambassadors said they chose the Traxx Series 4 20ft front door model because it was Australian made, had the features they wanted, quality internal fittings and was customizable.

“We went to lots of caravan shows and we were super happy with the quality of it,” Troy said.

One of the couple’s goals is to live off grid while still being able to run their businesses remotely – made possible by the Traxx Series 4’s upgradable battery system.

“That was the other thing that really stood out for us; the solar and the batteries giving you that opportunity to be away from people and still be able to work as well.

“We want to get away from the caravan parks and off-grid as much as possible, so that’s why we upgraded all the batteries.”

The RV world is changing and it’s not just about the Grey Nomads anymore. Young couples and families are hitting the road; Troy and Areti are proof of that.

Since buying the van in November last year, the couple have been on a few short runs.

One trip included the 2023 On The Move Owners Retreat, where they met a host of other couples and families travelling full time.

“We’ve done a few runs in it, any chance we get, we’re like little kids, we’re so excited,” Areti said.

Cheers to their new lifestyle! PHOTO: The Thrivin’ Wanderers
Troy and Areti PHOTO: The Thrivin’ Wanderers

Their trip will start from their base on the Gold Coast in Queensland, they’ll head up north first, to a wedding in the Atherton Tablelands. After that, the two don’t have a solid plan – the world is their oyster.

“We don’t want to do the typical lap of Australia, we’ve got no time limit or direction, so whichever way we want to go, we’ll go,” Areti said.

“We did the Great Ocean Road in winter for a long weekend, and we loved that, so we’re keen to get across (to the west) a bit further. We love coastal beaches and that sort of thing and then of course exploring the outback is cool too.”

Destinations that are on the cards for this trip include northwest Western Australia and the South Australian coastline.

You can follow Troy and Areti’s adventure – to see where they end up – here via their socials, The Thrivin Wanderers.

Troy and Areti’s On The Move Traxx Series 4 is all ready to hit the road. PHOTO: The Thrivin’ Wanderers

Not only is February 29 travellers Troy McLachlan and Areti Comino’s anniversary, but it’s the first day of the rest of their lives – the day they head off on the trip of a lifetime.

“We’ve been together for four years and we’re planning to head off on the day we met,” Areti said.

Troy and Areti were both living at the Gold Coast when they met in Broadbeach.

“We were out one night, and Troy stumbled over to me, (and we discovered) we’ve got lots in common with each other,” she said.

One of those things is, of course, the love of travelling. They’ve already seen parts of Australia together and separately, but they were always doing it – as Troy says – “in five-star-hotels”.

In a bid to see the country in a different way, the couple recently bought their first caravan, an On The Move Traxx Series 4 van, and plan to hit the road soon.

“It wasn’t until we met that we discovered that we liked exploring in this way (in a caravan) going to places like Moreton Island and Fraser Island (now known as K’gari),” Troy said.

The pair have both established successful careers and can work remotely, so decided there was nothing holding them back.

Troy owns a finance group and Areti owns several Snap Fitness clubs.

They’ll both be managing their businesses on the road, as well as documenting every minute of their journey on their social media account.

Areti said she’s excited to indulge in her love of landscape photography, but it won’t just be all about the pretty pictures – the couple want to create a community that shares and supports each other, that understands the need to help others.

“We’re both really creative and naturally I like to create content and I think what we want to do while we’re on the road requires us to have that social presence,” Areti said.

“But for us it’s not all about tourism, we want to be a good platform to share and help others. We want to tap into local economies and put a spotlight on fundraising on the road as well.

“There’s something always going on when the two of us are together on the road. He’s a bit of a hazard sometimes, so it should be entertaining for everyone.”

Owners Retreat December 2023

Imagine – you’re rolling into a caravan park, you park up and it’s immediately clear you’ve all got one thing in common – you’re all On The Move owners!

That’s what greeted the 100 people invited to the 2023 On The Move Owners Meet, an exclusive weekend designed to bring together those who love life out on the open road.

Owners retreat December 2023

Unless you’re at a caravan show you almost never see so many vans of the same brand in one location, but there were so many On The Move owners at the campground at Hidden Camp Pie Creek near Gympie, the venue was totally booked out.

Celebrity TV host and new Caravan HQ ambassador Scotty Hillier – otherwise known as Australia’s favourite larrikin fishing presenter – came to partake in the fun.

And he had an absolute ball – especially spending time fishing with the kids and sharing his secrets to reeling a big one in. He showed them how to put worms on a hook like a pro and cast a rod.

“That’s something I love doing,” he said.

“Caravanning is not just about the van, it’s about the lifestyle, it’s about what you could be doing and this event is a great example of that. You can park yourself up, go and do some fishing, bushwalking, or four-wheel-driving – there’s so many different things you can do and experience, make memories for life.

“Kevin, Ethan and the whole team at Caravan HQ and On The Move are just fantastic.”

Travellers Rita and David, who’ve clocked nearly 100,000km in their On The Move van over the last five years, enjoyed the camaraderie of the weekend.

“You rarely see other On The Move vans but when you do it’s in random places and you get on the UHF and say hi, but here, you’re talking to people with the same vans. It’s easy to make friends because you’ve got something in common already.”

His wife Rita said when they rolled in they immediately had compliments from other owners.

“They said our van looks brand new even though we’ve had it for five years and that’s down to how David looks it,” she said.

Hidden Camp at Pie Creek is aptly named – it’s a real hidden gem, complete with all camping facilities you’d need to be comfortable and a lagoon to cool down in. It was a perfect location for the 60 plus van owners to connect with each other and do what they love, travel, explore and build new relationships.

Every morning the On The Move caravanners were treated to the delicious aroma of sizzling bacon, with hosts Kevin, Ethan, Robin and the rest of the Caravan HQ crew starting the day from behind the barbeque. The day kicked off not just with breakfast but with a series of adventures –  from the thrill of four-wheel-driving, to casting lines off the stunning Rainbow Beach and indulging in a laid-back wine tasting. As the sun set, the days ended around the crackling campfire, with stories flowing freely and a dream of life on the road became reality.

Couple Lyn and David, who own a Traxx Series 2 van said they learned so much from both fellow caravanners and the On The Move team during the event.

“We’ve met some new friends and listened to some beautiful stories and found new places to go – everyone here has been sharing a lot,” she said.

David said the couple had been fans of the caravan life since they started 15 years ago, but even now after so long they continued to learn – and that was all down to events like this.

“There’s still a lot that we don’t know and it’s just a matter of learning from people who’ve done it before – not people in sales rooms, we’ve learnt a lot from these kinds of campgrounds. Without putting this event together, we would never know,” he said.

Traxx Series owners Ken and Tracey, who plan to travel around Australia next year once they retire, said they were very excited to get the invitation for the event.

“It’s been very exciting watching everyone drive in and see all of the vans together,” Tracey said.

“There’s a real community spirit here, everyone who is here loves their vans and everyone is happy. It’s really exciting to be here with everyone who’s got an On The Move van.”

Ethan and some of the team from Caravan HQ recently took a couple of On The Move Caravans away for a long weekend trip in the stunning Gold Coast hinterland. While he was there, he took the time to give a On The Move Caravans 18’6 Traxx Series 3 walk through.

The team went Barra fishing, did some beach driving, stayed at some great parks and had a whole lot of fun along the way. BCF were a co sponsor of the show, and it was great to work with them and their excellent products that go hand in hand with caravanning.

We hope you enjoy the video of this great trip.

I know magazines have slowly faded from our everyday lives, but I for one still love grabbing a mag and flicking through the pages, old school style. I personally find it much easier on the eys than reading a device. But hey, each to their own.

Caravan World has long been one of my favourites, and while you can read the articles online, I still subscribe to the magazine, and look forward to my copy arriving in the mail.

Anyway, my living in the past aside, have a read of the article, we hope you enjoy it.

A journey of expertise

Peter’s journey in the RV manufacturing industry began with a nine-year tenure as the General Manager Operation at Avida, a renowned Australian Motorhome manufacturer. During his time at Avida, he demonstrated a knack for spotting opportunities for improvement in processes and materials.

Following his successful stint at Avida, Peter took the reins as the Executive General Manager at Fleetwood RV, the Perth based manufacturer of Coromal and Windsor caravans. This role solidified his reputation as an industry leader, responsible for overseeing the production of some of Australia’s most loved caravan brands. Most recently, Peter assisted Cub Campers in bringing their first successful venture in to caravan development and production.

Innovative thinking

What sets Peter apart is his relentless pursuit of innovation. Not content with the status quo, he is always exploring manufacturing techniques from other industries, such as automotive, and additive manufacturing to find better ways to build caravans.

Overseeing On The Move Caravans imported range

Peter was the design and engineer brains behind On The Move Caravans new imported range of caravans. He is also responsible for overseeing the production in collaboration with our overseas manufacturing partner. His expertise ensures that every aspect of our imported range of caravans is meticulously crafted to meet and exceed Australian standards.

Peter spends a significant amount of time of the factory floor, ensuring that every step of the manufacturing process is executed to perfection. Quality control is a top priority, and Peter works closely with key staff in the factory to constantly improve the processes and workmanship.
